Abstract

he lathe machining process is a process of making the shape and size of a workpiece by cutting the rotating workpiece using a cutting tool in the form of a chisel. This study aims to analyze the effect of rotational speed and cutting depth on flat turning on the surface roughness and wear of ST 41 steel chisel bits. In this study, a right-hand flat lathe chisel made of HSS Bohler steel with a main cutting angle of 80o was used. This study used ST 41 steel with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 100 mm. Then this steel was flat turned using variations in cutting speed/rotation Cs1 = 20 mm/min, Cs2 = 25 mm/min Cs3 = 35 mm/min and variations in cutting depth a1 = 0.5 mm, a2 = 1 mm, a3 = 1.5 mm mm. After the flat turning process was carried out, the surface roughness measurement process was carried out using a roughness tester measuring tool. Then the chisel wear was measured using an Olympus digital microscope. The results of this study are that the best surface roughness value is found in the ST 41 steel workpiece specimen that was flat turned with a variation of Cs3 = 35 mm/min and a cutting depth of a1 = 0.5 mm, while the best tool wear value is found in the ST 41 steel workpiece specimen that was flat turned with a variation of Cs3 = 20 mm/min and a cutting depth of a1 = 0.5 mm.
