Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of the copper distance of the modified ignition distributor rotor on the performance of a four-cylinder gasoline engine. This modification is carried out as an alternative to improving performance without having to replace the main components of the engine. The research was conducted using a quantitative method with a Toyota Kijang 4K engine as the test object. Rotor spacing variations tested include standard rotors, 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, and 30 mm. The test parameters include effective shaft power (Ne), average effective pressure (Pe), fuel consumption (mf), specific fuel consumption (Be), volumetric efficiency (ηv), and thermal efficiency (ηth). The test results show that the modification of the rotor distance has a real effect on the performance of the engine. The rotor pitch of 20 mm results in the highest thermal efficiency of 0.799 or 79.9%, and the lowest specific fuel consumption of 0.102 kg/kWh, indicating optimal fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, rotor pitchers that are too long tend to increase fuel consumption and decrease efficiency. Based on these results, it is concluded that modifying the rotor distance of the distributor can be a practical solution in improving the performance of conventional gasoline engines, especially in vehicles with conventional ignition systems. Recommendations for follow-up research are to test the effects of these modifications on exhaust emissions and the use of alternative fuels
