Abstract
Liquid loading is one of the major challenges in gas production, where fluids such as water or condensate accumulate at the bottom of the well and cannot be lifted to the surface due to insufficient gas flowrate. This condition can lead to a significant decline in production or even complete well shutdown. This study aims to evaluate and compare the performance of seven liquid loading prediction models, namely Turner, Coleman, Li, Nosseir, Weber, Shunli, and Princewill. The evaluation is based on the calculation of each model’s critical velocity (Vcrit) and critical flowrate (Qcrit), which are then compared with actual flowrate data from secondary sources to determine the well status (loading or unloading). The results show that differences in physical assumptions and mathematical formulations across models significantly influence prediction outcomes. The Coleman, Li, and Weber models tend to produce lower Qcrit values (optimistic), whereas the Nosseir, Turner, and Princewill models yield higher Qcrit values (conservative). Meanwhile, the Shunli model offers a more balanced and moderate prediction. Further evaluation also indicates that wellhead pressure, well depth, API gravity, and liquid production rate are important influencing factors. Among the seven models analyzed, the Princewill model demonstrated the highest accuracy for wells with complex conditions, while the Shunli model stood out for its flexibility in application. This study provides valuable insights to guide the selection of appropriate prediction models based on specific gas well characteristics.
