Abstract

Traffic congestion is a significant issue in urban areas, including Pekanbaru City, particularly at the Arhanud T-Junction on Kaharuddin Nasution Street. This research was conducted to analyze the impact of heavy vehicles on traffic performance at the intersection. The objectives of this study are to determine traffic flow characteristics, identify the proportion of heavy vehicles passing through, and analyze their impact on the level of service (LOS) using the Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI) 2023. The research employs a quantitative method with a simulation approach using PTV Vissim software. The data analyzed include traffic volume, queue length (QLEN), delay time, and LOS values under various heavy vehicle proportion scenarios (ranging from 0% to 100%). The results indicate that the intersection's performance remains at LOS F under all scenarios, representing very poor traffic conditions with significant delays. The average queue length reaches 325 meters, while the delay time ranges between 114 and 118 seconds. An increase in the proportion of heavy vehicles exacerbates traffic performance, causing a reduction in speed and an increase in delay time. The conclusion of this study is that heavy vehicles significantly impact congestion and traffic performance at the Arhanud T-Junction. Adjustments to traffic light cycle times and more effective traffic management policies are needed to reduce congestion impacts at this intersection.
