Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning embedded in the Tepuk Tepung Tawar ritual performed during traditional Malay wedding ceremonies in Kemuning District, Riau Province. The ritual, rich in symbolic cultural values, is still practiced by the community as a form of blessing and prayer for the couple's wellbeing. The main focus of this research is on how the symbolic meanings of the ritual are interpreted, preserved, and passed down across generations, and how cultural communication unfolds within this context. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and youth informants, both those who have and have not participated directly in the Tepuk Tepung Tawar ceremony. The data were analyzed using Ernest Bormann’s Symbolic Convergence Theory to explore the process of collective meaning formation within the cultural community. The findings reveal that Tepuk Tepung Tawar is interpreted as a symbol of purification, protection, and hope for a harmonious married life. The traditional community emphasizes the importance of preserving the symbolic meanings through the active role of the Malay Customary Institution (LAM) and traditional leaders in transmitting cultural values. However, generational differences were observed, with some young people showing a shift in understanding due to the influence of modernization. In conclusion, the Tepuk Tepung Tawar ritual serves not only as a ceremonial tradition but also as a medium of symbolic communication that unites cultural values through shared stories (symbolic convergence) deeply rooted in the Malay community of Kemuning.
