Abstract
Social comparison is a self-assessment process that occurs when an individual compares himself/herself to others, especially in the absence of objective standards. Social comparison can currently be done through social media. Social comparisons that are made can affect self-esteem. This study was conducted to see the relationship between social comparison and self-esteem of Riau University students who have social media. This study used a probability sampling technique with 383 research subjects. Data collection used two scales, namely the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) by Rosenberg and the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) by Gibbons and Buunk (1999). The analysis of this study used rho correlation analysis. The results of the analysis showed a sig result of -0.136 (p> 0.05) which means that there is a significant relationship between the two variables and is negative. This means that the higher the social comparison behavior, the lower the self-esteem.
