Abstract

This study aims to uncover the symbolic meaning of the flushing procession in Javanese traditional weddings in the Pekanbaru area through the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes' culture. The flush procession, which is denotatively a ritual of bathing the bride-to-be, has a deep connotation as a symbol of spiritual purification, prayer of blessing, and the formation of cultural identity in a multiethnic society. In the context of urban societies such as Pekanbaru, this practice undergoes a transformation of meaning and symbols, both due to local influences and cross-cultural adaptations. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation and documentation of various sources of journals or books. The results of the analysis show that symbols such as water, tumpeng, jug, and janur are not only aesthetically meaningful, but also reflect religious, social, and historical values that have been passed down from generation to generation. The flush procession plays an important role in strengthening the cultural identity of the Javanese community in Pekanbaru, as well as being a means of communicating ancestral values to the younger generation. Thus, flushing is not just a ceremony, but a cultural representation that is full of moral and ideological messages. This research is expected to enrich the treasures of cultural communication, especially in the preservation of local traditions in the midst of modernity and globalization.
