Abstract

This study aims to find out the motives of Riau Islamic University students in using Netflix as a means of relaxation. High academic and social pressure is faced by students, so the impact is that they are looking for entertainment solutions that are easily accessible and flexible. One of the media, namely Netflix, is the means chosen by students, this media is able to provide emotional comfort, entertainment, and new knowledge. In this study, a qualitative approach with a descriptive method is used. The data collection technique was through semi-structured interviews with six informants from various faculties. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman technique, which includes three main stages, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that there are four main motives in using Netflix based on motives according to McQuail (2010), namely information motives (surveillance), personal identity motives (personal identity), motives of integration and social interaction (personal relationship), and motives of entertainment (diversion). These four motives play a variety of roles in complementing students' needs for relaxation from heavy routines. Netflix serves as a self-reflection, social relationship enhancer, and informal learning. With that, the use of Netflix is complex and relevant to the dynamics of student life at the Islamic University of Riau.
