Abstract
The Islamic University of Riau (UIR) as an Islamic-based university implements Muslim dress rules and Islamic courses as a whole, including for non-Muslim female students. This study aims to examine the communication accomodation strategies of non-Muslim female students to these rules using the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) theoretical approach. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that explores the experiences of non-Muslim female students in interacting in the Islamic campus environment. The results showed that non-Muslim female students applied various forms of communication strategies, such as convergence in an effort to conform to dominant norms, over-accommodation that reflected excessive adjustment to the point of causing psychological distress, and divergence as a way of maintaining their cultural and religious identity. The accomodation is active and selective, taking into account the balance between social acceptance and personal integrity. These findings confirm that the process of accommodation communication for non-Muslim female students takes place dynamically in the face of the dominant culture in the Islamic-based higher education environment.
