Abstract

This study aims to understand and describe the meaning of the Mandi Mayang tradition which is one of the traditional ceremonies that are still preserved by the Banjar community in Kotabaru Seberida Village, Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. This study is based on the habits of the people in Kotabaru Seberida Village who still follow or commemorate the Mandi Mayang tradition, especially those from the Banjar tribe. The theory used to describe this study is the symbolic interaction theory put forward by George Herbert Mead, Data collection techniques using observation, interviews and documentation. This study aims to explore the meanings contained in the implementation of this tradition from a spiritual, social, and cultural perspective. By using a qualitative approach and descriptive methods that aim to describe the meaning of each procession carried out and implemented in the Banjar tribe's Mandi Mayang tradition, data collection is carried out through observation, interviews with traditional leaders, and documentation of activities. The results of the study show that the community in the village of Kotabaru Seberida still carries out the procession of Mandi Mayang before getting married, Mandi Mayang has a symbolic value as a means of self-purification, protection from disaster, and respect for ancestors, and holy bathing is considered a repellent, This tradition also functions as a medium for inheriting cultural values and strengthening the identity of the Banjar ethnic group in the midst of an increasingly heterogeneous society. The sustainability of this tradition reflects the community's efforts to maintain local wisdom as an important part of their lives.
