Abstract

This study examines how the online news platform Kompas.com constructs narratives regarding the rejection of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The Rohingya, fleeing long-standing persecution and systemic discrimination in Myanmar, have sparked controversy upon arriving in Indonesia, especially in Aceh. Initially, public and governmental responses were humanitarian in nature. However, as the number of refugees increased, resistance and rejection from local communities also grew, often amplified by media portrayals. In this context, media does not merely serve as an information provider but also plays a significant role in shaping public opinion. This research aims to analyze the textual dimension of Kompas.com's reporting on the rejection of Rohingya refugees. The data consists of seven news articles published during December 2023. The study employs a qualitative method, applying Fairclough’s CDA to uncover how language and ideology operate within the media text. The findings reveal that Kompas.com’s news articles present a dual narrative: while some texts reinforce rejection discourse through labeling, stereotypes, and portrayals of refugees as threats to social stability, others highlight humanitarian aspects, especially regarding vulnerable groups such as women and children. The study concludes that Kompas.com's reporting reflects a tension between national interests, public sentiment, and universal humanitarian values. This duality illustrates how media representation can simultaneously generate empathy and perpetuate stigma. The research underlines the importance of media literacy and critical reporting in covering sensitive issues like refugees to prevent the spread of bias and discrimination. It contributes to academic discourse on the media’s role in constructing social and political realities, and calls for more ethical and balanced journalism practices in crisis reporting.
