Abstract

Emotional intelligence is how individuals can understand their own emotions and the emotions of others. This study aims to describe how emotional intelligence is in the lives of inmates in detention centers. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The data were collected using interview techniques. The results of this study indicate that informants have good selfregulation, although with different ways of expressing themselves. There are also findings that informants differ in dealing with problems. Informants can establish good social relationships with other inmates. Overall, emotional intelligence can help inmates to serve their prison terms better without causing conflict. The results of this study can be input for detention centers to support the development of emotional intelligence for inmates.
