Abstract

Overseas students are often faced with social and cultural adaptation challenges that can affect their psychological well-being. The inability to accept self-deficiencies can have an impact on decreasing Subjective Well-Being. This study aims to determine the effect of Grit and Gratitude on Subjective Well-Being in overseas students. The research sample amounted to 295 overseas students of the Faculty of Psychology, Riau Islamic University, who were selected using purposive sampling technique. The instruments used include the Grit Scale (Escale Grit de Oviedo/EGO) with 10 items, the Gratitude Scale (Gratitude Questionnaire-Six Item Form/GQ-6) with 6 items, and Subjective Well-Being which is measured using two scales, namely Satisfaction with Life Scale (5 items) and Scale of Positive and Negative Experiences (20 items). Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method based on Partial Least Square (PLS) with the help of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The results of the analysis show that Grit has a positive and significant effect on Subjective Well-Being with a path coefficient value of 0.090 (p = 0.000), and Gratitude also has a significant positive effect with a coefficient of 0.674 (p = 0.000). Thus, the research hypothesis is accepted. The findings in shows that the higher the level of Grit and Gratitude that overseas students have, the higher the level of Subjective Well-Being they feel.
