Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of social media use on body image in adolescents. The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of increasing social media use among adolescents, which has the potential to influence how they view and evaluate their own bodies. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey method, and the sampling technique used was online accidental sampling. The number of respondents in this study was 278 adolescents. The measurement instruments used were the Social Media Use (SMU) Scale developed by Tuck and Thompson (2023) and the Body Image Scale by Cash & Pruzinsky (2004). Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed a significant effect of social media on body image with an F value of 11.633 and p < 0.05. However, the coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.039 indicates that the influence of social media is only 3.9%, with the remainder influenced by other factors. Thus, it can be concluded that social media use has a significant but small effect on adolescent body image.
