Abstract

This study evaluates the performance of Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) in increasing LAN network bandwidth using Graphical Network Simulator 3 (GNS3). The need for fast, stable, and reliable computer networks is very important, but LAN networks often face performance problems such as slow data transfer speeds, limited bandwidth, and bottlenecks. LACP is a method that combines multiple physical links into one logical link to overcome bandwidth limitations and increase network availability. Given the expensive implementation of LACP in real environments, GNS3 is used as an efficient simulation medium. The evaluation is carried out by comparing network conditions before and after LACP activation, and testing the reliability and efficiency of LACP in failover scenarios. Topology simulations are carried out using virtual devices in GNS3, with 4-Channel LACP configurations (Active-Active and Active-Passive modes) and without LACP (Single-link). Throughput testing using Iperf3 and failover testing were also performed. The results showed that the Passive LACP mode consistently produced much higher throughput than Active LACP. The average bandwidth for Active LACP was 372.8 Mbits/s, while Passive LACP achieved an average of 488.6 Mbits/s, showing a performance improvement of about 31%. The results of the passive LACP (4C) test showed excellent and consistent bandwidth performance, and the use of LACP was effective in overcoming failover. This study is expected to provide an overview and technical recommendations for network administrators in designing more efficient and reliable network systems. Passive LACP mode was found to be more resource efficient and less susceptible to small fluctuations associated with active negotiation.
