Abstract
Clays are known for their high swelling and shrinkage properties, which can create issues when working with them. Common problems in clay soils include low bearing capacity and slow settlement due to low permeability. To address these issues, a soil stabilization method was used, incorporating a mixture of Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) materials. The SBE mixture was added in percentages of 10%, 20%, and 30% to the dry weight of the original soil. The aim of the research was to assess the impact of the SBE waste on the consolidation of the clay soil. The study focused on the physical and mechanical properties of the soil, with consolidation testing conducted using an Oedometer tool. In the consolidation test, the determining parameters are the value of the compression index (Cc), the coefficient of consolidation (Cv) and the settlement of consolidation (Sc). Results showed that as the percentage of SBE mixture increased, the coefficient of consolidation (Cv) also increased, reaching 0.097 cm2/s in the sample with 30% TA+SBE mixture. Additionally, the compression index (Cc) decreased by 0.221, and the settlement of consolidation (Sc) decreased to 2.996 cm in the 30% TA+SBE mixture. This suggests that the use of the SBE mixture reduced pore cavity size, resulting in denser soil and lower settlement compared to the original soil (Sc = 3.852 cm). The conclusion of this research is that SBE can be used as a stabilization material for clay soil mixtures.
