Abstract
Clay soil is a common problem in several areas in Riau, including the Sail area, Tenayan Raya Sub-district, Pekanbaru. When it rains, the clay soil in this region becomes wet and very soft, causing the surface to become slippery and potentially leading to accidents. The lack of soil grip is the main factor contributing to the risk for road users and pedestrians, who are susceptible to slipping and accidents. To address this issue, effective soil stabilization efforts are necessary. One method that can be considered is the use of stabilizing materials such as palm oil fiber waste and waterglass. The objective of this research is to determine the influence of changing CBR values and shear strength on soil that has been stabilized using a mixture of palm oil fiber waste and waterglass at optimum moisture content conditions. This research employed laboratory testing methods, namely CBR (California Bearing Ratio) and UCS (Unconfined Compression Strength) tests, using additional materials such as palm oil fiber waste obtained from a palm oil processing plant located in Pelalawan Regency, and waterglass which was acquired from a chemical store. The variations of soil mixtures with palm oil fiber waste were 9%, 12%, and 15%, while the waterglass content was 5% of the dry weight of the soil. The testing conditions included no soaking, soaking for 4 and 7 days, and immersion for 4 and 7 days for the CBR tests. The research results show that the CBR value of the original soil without soaking and curing is 4.67%. After adding 9%, 12%, and 15% of palm oil fiber waste and 5% waterglass, the CBR values increased to 10.43%, 11.63%, and 10.73% respectively. Furthermore, the stabilized soil, cured for 4 days, resulted in CBR values of 18.12%, 18.92%, and 19.13%. The curing period of 7 days led to CBR values of 14.45%, 17.87%, and 17.92%. In the case of soaking for 4 days, the CBR value of the original soil was 2.25%, and after stabilization, it increased to 9.92%, 11.5%, and 11.83%, respectively. The 7-day curing period resulted in CBR values of 8.42%, 11.3%, and 11.67%. Additionally, the research also showed that the undrained shear strength (cu) of the original soil without curing was 1.67 kg/cm², and after stabilization, it increased to 1.83 kg/cm², 1.93 kg/cm², and 1.9 kg/cm², respectively, for the 4-day curing period. Furthermore, the stabilized soil cured for 4 days yielded undrained shear strength (cu) values of 1.99 kg/cm², 2.09 kg/cm², and 2.54 kg/cm². Besides the 4-day curing, the stabilized soil was also cured for 7 days, resulting in undrained shear strength (cu) values of 1.86 kg/cm², 2.13 kg/cm², and 2.17 kg/cm². The research indicates that the utilization of palm oil fiber waste and waterglass as stabilizing materials has the potential to effectively address soft soil problems.
