Abstract
Areca nut is one of Indonesia's main export commodities, the potential for land for areca nut farming in Kemuning District is also very potential. However, farmers are still not maximally exploiting this potential, farmers tend not to be serious about cultivating areca nut so that production cannot be maximized. This research aims to analyze: 1) Farmer characteristics and areca nut farming profiles; 2) Areca nut farming; 3) Areca nut marketing system; 4) Strategy for developing dried areca nut business in Kemuning District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Research using a survey method was carried out for 6 months from October 2023 to March 2024. The data used is primary and secondary data which is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, farming analysis, marketing analysis, as well as SWOT and QSPM. The research results show that the average areca nut farmer is 45 years old, has an elementary school (SD) level of education, the farmer has 13 years of farming experience and has 4 family dependents. Average land area is 0.7 ha, average areca nut production is 3,203 kg/gp/year. The total costs incurred by farmers are IDR. 8,872,031 gp/year, gross income is Rp. 9,095,714 gp/year, net income of Rp. 223,684 gp/year with a farming efficiency of 1.09. Areca nut farmers in Kemuning District market areca nut through one channel only, namely farmers to village traders to subdistrict traders to district traders, the marketing functions carried out by farmers are only sales, storage, risk bearing and market information. Village traders do not carry out standardization and grading marketing functions. District and district traders perform all marketing functions. Marketing costs for village traders are IDR. 310 /kg with a margin of Rp. 1,667 /kg, and a profit of IDR 1,357 /kg and an efficiency of 6.89%. Marketing costs for sub-district traders are IDR. 800 /kg with a margin of Rp. 2,000 /kg, profit of Rp. 1,200 /kg and efficiency of 12.31%. Meanwhile, marketing costs for Regency traders are IDR. 796 /kg with a margin of Rp. 1,500 / kg, and profit Rp. 704 /kg and efficiency of 9.95%. The areca nut farming development strategy that can be implemented first is that easy areca cultivation should be able to enable farmers to maximize production, so that the quantity of areca nut sold is greater (ST1).
