Abstract
Verbal abuse experienced by children often causes severe depression so that the children can lose their desire and ability to participate and socialize in society. In the parenting style that is applied at home, many parents are often too strict and uncompromising when educating their children. Even though this assertive attitude has good intentions from parents towards their children, the choice of bad words when speaking to children is still considered as verbal abuse. This is also experienced by the children aged 5-6 years at the Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru. So, the researcher is interested in doing a study at that kindergarten. The problem formulation of the study is whether there is a relationship between the parents’ verbal abuse and the self-esteem of children aged 5-6 years at Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru. The aim of the study is to find out the relationship between the parents’ verbal abuse and the self-esteem of children aged 5-6 years at the Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru. This is a quantitative study with a correlational approach. The total population of the study is 40 respondents. And the number of subjects and samples of the study are the pupils’ parents of Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru, totaling 40 people. The data collection technique of the study is questionnaires. The data analysis techniques of the study are validity testing and product moment correlation test. The results of the study show that the product moment correlation indicates that t-count > t-table (5.061 > 1.68), so the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that the parents’ verbal abuse has a positive and significant relationship with the self-esteem of children aged 5-6 years at the Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru. The magnitude of the contribution of parents’ verbal abuse to the self-esteem of children aged 5-6 years can be seen from the correlation (R) 56.36%, it means that there is a moderate relationship between the parents’ verbal abuse and the self-esteem of children aged 5-6 years at the Nahdatul Athfal Islamic Kindergarten of Pekanbaru.
