Abstract

Wedding ceremony Is an integral part of the cultural heritage that lives and develops in the area. This traditional ceremony reflects the cultural and customary values embodied by the processions that are carried out at the time of the wedding, it can also be through objects, food and speech. for the toba people, a series of cultures and customs are also manifested through everyday life. This study aims to find out the message conveyed by looking for the meaning of symbolic interactions that describe the relationship between humans contained in the traditional toba batak wedding ceremony. especially during the Jambar handover procession. Jambar is one of the symbols used in Toba Batak traditional marriages. Giving and receiving jambar cannot be separated from the dalihan na tolu as the philosophy of life of the Toba Batak people. The exchange of jambar as a traditional symbol is an element of kinship to tie family ties. This research is a type of qualitative research, which is carried out by observing in the field, conducting direct interviews with informants and documenting it in the form of photographs. The results of the study were analyzed using George Herbert Mead’s symbolic interaction method. The results of the research from the data findings obtained by the researcher indicate that the process of the show party taking place in the toba batak wedding. The whole process of the wedding ceremony at the show contains the meaning of the existence and process contained in dalihan na tolu especially during the Jambar handover procession.
