Abstract

This study is motivated by the low cognitive learning outcomes of students in grade XI at SMAN 1 Tanah Putih. This study aims to investigate whether there is an influence of expository learning strategies on students’ cognitive outcomes in learning Islamic Studies in grade XI at SMAN 1 Tanah Putih. The type of the study is quantitative with a correlational approach. The population of the study consists of 234 students in grade XI with a sample of 146 students. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation. The results of the study show that the alternative hypothesis stating that there is an influence of expository learning strategies on students’ cognitive outcomes is accepted with a significance value of 0.000. The level of teacher who applies expository learning strategies is 0.8727 or 87.27%. This value, if interpreted, is in the interval of 81% - 100% with a very good level. Then the result of the expository learning strategy level (variable X) is 87.27%, or it can be stated to be very good. The level of students’ cognitive outcomes (variable Y) is 0.8794 or 87.94%. This value, if interpreted, is in the interval of 81% - 100% with a very high level. Then the results of the level of students’ cognitive outcomes (variable Y) is 87.94%, or it can be stated to be very high. And the influence of expository learning strategies on students’ cognitive learning outcomes is 77.2% with a strong category. While the remaining 100% - 77.2% = 22.8% is influenced by other factors. The relationship between expository learning strategies and students’ cognitive outcomes is 0.879 or 87.9%, it is predicted that if the level of expository learning increases then it will increase the students’ cognitive learning outcomes by 0.879 or 87.9%. Vice versa, if the expository learning strategy decreases, the students’ cognitive outcomes will also decrease by 0.879 or 87.9%, because the relationship between expository learning strategies and cognitive learning outcomes is in the range of 0.80 – 1.000, which is very strong.
