Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of interaction and the main effect of Variety Type with Leaf Pruning on the Growth and Production of Sweet Corn Plants (Zea mays saccharata Sturt). It has been carried out in the experimental garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Riau Islamic University, Pekanbaru, for 3 months from March to May 2023. This study used a Split Plot Design, the main plot is the variety and the subplot is pruning. The variety treatment consists of 4 treatment levels, namely Panglima, Bonanza, Sweet Boy, Master Sweet Varieties and pruning consists of 4 treatment levels, namely Without leaf pruning, Pruning 1/3 of the lower leaves, Pruning 1/3 of the middle leaves, Pruning 1/3 of the upper leaves, so that there are 16 treatment combinations with 3 replications. This study consists of 48 experimental units. Each experimental unit consists of 4 plants and 2 sample plants, a total of 192 plants. The parameters observed were plant height, stem diameter, age of male flower emergence, age of female flower emergence, weight of cob with husk, length of cob without husk, cob diameter, number of rows in one cob, dry weight of cob. The observation data were analyzed statistically and carried out with the Advanced Test of Honestly Significant Differences at the 5% level. The results showed that the interaction of variety type and leaf pruning had a significant effect on all observation parameters. The best treatment was the Panglima variety and pruning of the lower 1/3. The main plot treatment had a significant effect on all observation parameters. The best treatment was the Panglima variety. The sub-plot treatment had a significant effect on all observation parameters. The best treatment was pruning the lower 1/3 of the leaves. Keywords: Sweet Corn, Leaf Pruning, Variety
