Abstract

This study is motivated by the problem of students’ critical thinking skills at the Islamic Education Study Program, Islamic University of Riau. A student must have critical thinking skill, because it can make someone more open-minded and can also make someone communicate much better. The problem formulation of the study is: How big is the influence of the problem-based learning method on students’ critical thinking skills at the Islamic Education Study Program, the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Islamic University of Riau? The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of problem-based learning method on students’ critical thinking skills at the Islamic Education Study Program, the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Islamic University of Riau. The population of the study is students of the Islamic Education study program in academic year of 2022. The sampling technique is taken by using the Slovin formula 5% of the population, namely 125 students. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation. The results of the study show that the alternative hypothesis stating that there is an influence of problem-based learning method on students’ critical thinking is accepted with a significance value of 0.000. The magnitude of the influence of the problem-based learning method on students’ critical thinking skills is moderate (0.521 or 52.1%). It can be predicted that if the problem-based learning method is improved, it will contribute to improving students’ critical thinking by (0.591 or 59.1%). So, It can be concluded that the result of this study is that there is an influence of the problem-based learning method on students’ critical thinking skills at the Islamic Education Study Program, Islamic University of Riau.
