Abstract

Academic stress is often experienced by students who are working on their thesis as part of academic demands. To reduce the level of stress experienced, students need peer support. This study aims to determine the relationship between peer support and academic stress in students who are working on their thesis. The sample of this study was 210 students who were working on their thesis which was determined using the cluster sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SLSI) scale which has 51 statements and the Peer Support Questionnaire (PSQ) scale which consists of 22 statements. Based on the results of the statistical analysis used is the sperm rank correlation. The results showed that there was no relationship between peer support and academic stress with a value of (r) = 0.063 and a significance value of 0.361 (p>0.05). If the sample is grouped by gender, it is found that there is a significant negative relationship between peer support and academic stress in the male group with a value of (r) = -0.332 and a significance value of 0.006 (p <0.05), while in the female group, it is found that there is a significant positive relationship between peer support and academic stress with a value of (r) = 0.185 and a significance value of 0.026 (P <0.05). The results of the study have implications for the importance of providing peer support to male students who are working on their thesis.
