Abstract

Parents are responsible for meeting the needs of children in order to develop the whole existence of children, these needs include biological needs and psychological needs such as a sense of security, being cared for, understood as a child, so that children can grow and develop towards a harmonious direction. But a lot of parents behave overprotective intentionally or unintentionally. As a result, children feel their scope is limited, feel constrained, and are not allowed to make their own decisions, so that children experience adjustment problems. This study aims to determine the relationship between overprotective behavior and self-adjustment in Riau Islamic University students. The sample in this study amounted to 406 active students at Riau Islamic University using simple random sampling technique. In this study using quantitative research methods, the measuring instrument used in this study is the overprotective behavior scale adapted from Farra Avisa (2021) and the self-adjustment scale adapted from Khoiroh (2016) Based on the results of the spearman rank analysis test with a correlation coefficient value (r) =-0.291 and with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05). This shows that there is a significant negative relationship between parental overprotective behavior and self-adjustment in Riau Islamic University students.
