Abstract
Students must understand the form and meaning of words when reading texts, such as derivational affixes, which can change the class and meaning of words in sentences. Based on the phenomena, the knowledge of English derivational morphemes is very important point for English learners, where it assists the English learners to guess the meaning of new words and construct new forms successfully. The purpose of this study is to make it easier for students to understand English texts by using derived morphemes (prefixes and suffixes). This study utilizes a descriptive approach in a qualitative way, using the researcher herself and Text book instruments, using a review of the document BRIGHT AN ENGLISH COURSE 1 (K-MERDEKA) "book for seven grades published by Erlangga. The findings of this study show that there are two verb markers, sixty-five noun markers, forty-seven adjective markers, and thirty-four adverb markers. there are prefixes and affixes of derivational morphemes namely, the prefix re-,suffix -ize, -er/ -or, -ion/ -tion, -ness, -ity/ -ty, -ment, -al, -ence, -ist, -ry, -ness, -ess, -ship, -cy, -ful, -ous, -ive, -ly, -ic, -al, -y, -ish, -ant, -ative, -istic, -ational, -less, -ary, ent, -ar, -ible, -ly, and -fully. Based on the findings, it can be seen that the use of verbs in the book is few, whereas verbs are dominant in daily life. In addition, there is an improvement to the content of the text by adding more vocabulary to the verb usage
