Abstract

The advancement of automotive technology has increased the speed of motor vehicles, necessitating adherence to speed limits to reduce traffic accidents. The Internet of Things (IoT) can help monitor and control vehicle speeds more effectively. This research aims to design a prototype system for detecting vehicle speed that can capture images of vehicles exceeding speed limits. This prototype uses an infrared (IR) sensor, a webcam, and a Raspberry Pi as the microcontroller. The research identifies several main issues, including the accuracy and precision of speed measurement using the IR sensor, integration of the IR sensor with a remote shutter for quick response, and handling environmental challenges such as bad weather and light interference. Based on these identifications, the research formulates several problems, including the design of the speed detection device, setting the speed limit, and managing vehicle image data. The results of this research are expected to provide benefits in real-time vehicle speed information collection, user warnings, and accurate speed violation data presentation. Additionally, this system is expected to become a competitive and productive alternative technology to enhance traffic safety.
