Abstract

In pronouncing the words students need to know sounds of vocals and consonants. The students need to be able to pronounce all vocals and consonants in English. This study aims to determine vowel sounds that are difficult to pronounce by the second grade students of MTs Masmur Pekanbaru. This research used descriptive method with the research instrument was an oral test consisting of 11 English vowel sounds. The research subject was the second grade student at Mts Masmur Pekanbaru, namely class VIII-1 which consisted of 25 students. Data was collected through a pronunciation test, and were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research showed that there are four vowel sounds that are difficult for the students to pronounce. The most difficult types of English vowel to pronounce are the word “pursue” (80%) from the English vowel /3:/, the “word” rush (56%) from the English vowel /?:/, the word “bat” (56%) from the English vowel /æ:/, and the word “meaningful” (52%) from the English vowel /i:/. The difficulty is caused by students were unfamiliar and rarely listen to the pronunciation of the words, and also not knowing well about phonetic symbols. In conclusion, there are four English vowels which are difficult to pronounce by the second grade students of Mts Masmur Pekanbaru.
