Abstract

An analysis of students‘ reading comprehension of news item text with online news media resource at the twelfth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Koto Gasib This research aimed to find out how good is the students reading comprehension of news item text with online news media resources at the twelfth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Koto Gasib. There were 3 indicators of reading comprehension in this research namely newsworthy, background and source. The students need to understand these indicators in order to make them able to comprehend news item text well. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was 5 classes which consisted of 164 students and the sample of this research was in 1 class only which consisted of 35 students. To get the data of research, the researcher used reading test which consisted of 15 items test; 5 items for newsworthy, 5 items for background and 5 items for source indicator. The script of the test was taken from news text that published by CNN International as the source of the text. Based on the data analysis, the students at SMA Negeri 1 Koto Gasib in the twelfth grade generally have fair levels of reading comprehension ability. Online news media resources provide positive motivation in the activity of news item text reading comprehension learning at the twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Koto Gasib. It was found that the students need to understand about the indicators of reading comprehension news item text namely newsworthy, background and source. So that they would not be difficult to comprehend the text given.
