Abstract

With the changes in dynamics that occur, single mothers want to form aspects of independence for their teenage children. So this study aims to determine how interpersonal communication of single mothers in forming adolescent independence in Bukit Payung Village. Interpersonal communication is the most essential thing in human relationships, especially in families. Interpersonal communication can change opinions, behaviors, views and also attitudes of individuals. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method, with the research subjects being single mothers and their teenage children. In determining informants, the researcher used the purposive sumption technique. The results of this study indicate that interpersonal communication between single mothers and teenagers in Bukit Payung Village plays an important role in forming independence. Through open communication, single mothers are able to instill values of independence in their children. The communication process applied not only includes giving advice or direction, but also involves open communication that builds trust and emotional closeness.
