Abstract

This research aims to understand the semiotic meaning of cultural values embedded in the tari makan sirih (betel-eating dance) in Pekanbaru, Riau province. The tari makan sirih is one of the cultural arts of the Malay Riau, which continues to develop. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation based on Roland Barthes' theory. The results of the research show that there are three periods of development: the first is the creation of the dance, the second is its use in welcoming high-ranking national guests, including the President, and the third is the change in the name of the tari makan sirih to tari persembahan makan sirih (the offering betel-eating dance). The tari makan sirih holds deep symbolic meanings, which include the movements, costumes, accessories, and the significance within the betel set (tepak sirih). This research is expected to contribute to efforts to preserve the tari makan sirih culture and increase awareness, especially among the younger generation, about the importance of maintaining the continuity of cultural heritage.
