Abstract

Temu Manten is a significant part of Javanese traditional wedding ceremonies, rich in cultural symbols and values passed down through generations. Each stage of the ritual—such as balangan gantal, wijik dadi, sinduran, kacar-kucur, and sungkeman—holds specific meanings as a form of moral, spiritual, and cultural messages related to harmonious family life. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The theoretical framework applied is James W. Carey's ritual communication theory, which views communication as a participatory process of sharing meaning and maintaining shared values through symbolic actions. The findings show that while the Temu Manten tradition is still practiced, it has undergone shifts in both implementation and meaning. Influences from modernization have led to a decline in younger generations’ understanding of the symbolic values embedded in the rituals. Several elements are either omitted or modified, potentially reducing the depth of their original meanings. In conclusion, Temu Manten serves not only as a ceremonial custom but also as a cultural communication medium that reinforces Javanese identity and traditional values. Therefore, efforts such as cultural education and community involvement are essential to preserve and revitalize this tradition amid ongoing social changes.
