Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the management of communication uncertainty anxiety in students from Malaysia and Thailand at Riau Islamic University. This study uses the AUM (Anxiety-Uncertainty Managemet) theory developed by Gudykunst in 1985. This theory focuses on managing anxiety and uncertainty and this theory argues that the ability to overcome communication barriers can motivate individuals to participate in effective intercultural communication. The research method used is descriptive with a qualitative research approach. The sampling technique was carried out using Purposive Sampling technique, in which the researcher set certain criteria for informants. The subjects of this research were Malaysian and Thai students who were studying at Riau Islamic University. In addition, this research uses data collection techniques conducted through interviews and documentation. The results showed that the management of anxiety and uncertainty is done with various strategies. In managing anxiety, informants utilize social media to learn the language, increase interaction with people around, prepare themselves before communicating, ask to repeat questions, speak slowly to facilitate understanding, and take an attitude of courage to admit if there is a mistake. These steps help reduce nervousness in communication. Meanwhile, managing uncertainty by trying to understand the content of the communication context first before giving answers from friends and being open to social interactions helped informants adapt to new environments.
