Abstract
ABSTRACT Self-Concept of Adolescents at Al-Hasanah Orphanage Tiara Betria 209110098 Adolescence is a critical developmental phase characterized by emotional instability and influenced by social interactions. Adolescents living in orphanages face unique challenges, including stigma and varied social interactions, which shape their self-concept. The methodology used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, which involves in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. This research aims to explore the self-concept of adolescents living in Al-Hasanah Orphanage. The research selected six teenage informants from the orphanage, including those who are orphans, orphans, and those who still have both parents. In addition, supporting information was collected from caregivers and mentors at the orphanage. The results showed that the adolescents had good knowledge of their personal and social identities, including age, ethnicity, and family background. They were aware of their origins and family relationships, which contributed to the formation of their self-concept. The adolescents also had clear aspirations and goals, with a strong desire to achieve success and self-improvement, driven by their unique circumstances and support from the orphanage. Self-evaluation showed that adolescents had varying levels of self-confidence and self-assessment. Adolescents who have lived in the orphanage for a long time show better adaptation and higher self-esteem compared to new residents who are still in the adjustment process. The supportive environment at the orphanage plays an important role in shaping a positive selfconcept. Activities, guidance and interaction with peers contribute to their personal development. This study concludes that adolescents in Al-Hasanah orphanage develop a positive self-concept influenced by supportive social interactions and structured activities. Despite facing initial challenges, the orphanage environment fosters resilience and self-improvement among the residents. Recommendations for future research include exploring the long-term impact of the orphanage environment on self-concept development and comparative studies with adolescents living with their families.
