Abstract
The film Jakarta vs Everybody depicts the experience of a newcomer facing social and economic pressures in the capital, which gives rise to internal conflicts within him. This study aims to analyze the internal conflicts of the main character, Dom, through the semiotic approach of John Fiske and the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud. The method used is content analysis with observation and documentation techniques. The semiotic approach is applied to understand how meaning is formed through three levels of coding: reality, which examines gestures, facial expressions, and cinematographic techniques; representation, which explores monologues, dialogues, and narrative delivery in portraying the character's inner struggles; and ideology, which reveals the values of liberalism, individualism, patriarchy, materialism, and capitalism that shape the social dynamics of a newcomer in an urban environment. To deepen the psychological aspects, Freud's psychoanalysis is also applied to trace how internal conflicts are reflected in the emotional drives of the main character. The results of the study show that Dom experiences various internal conflicts, such as anger, disappointment, dissatisfaction, shame, concern, confusion, helplessness, awkwardness, fear, and sadness. Through the combination of semiotic and psychoanalytic approaches, this research reveals how the film constructs a complex representation of the reality of a newcomer’s life in a big city, as well as how the psychological dynamics of the character are reflected in its visual and cinematic narrative.
