Abstract

Surface runoff is supplied by rainfall and absorbed through land. The amount and rate of surface runoff depend not only on the catchment area but also significantly on rainfall intensity and physical conditions such as soil density, land cover, and slope gradient. Higher soil density can increase runoff discharge. This study aims to analyze the relationship between soil physical characteristics and surface conditions with the infiltration rate. The results are expected to provide optimal land-use guidance to support sustainable drainage systems and maintain groundwater balance. The methods used in this study include soil characteristic analysis through soil property testing to determine soil density, and hydrological analysis using local rainfall data from Pekanbaru City between 2014 and 2023. Surface runoff flow rates were calculated at three locations to identify where the highest surface runoff occurs. The study found that the maximum rainfall intensity was 131.988 mm/hour, with the highest soil density recorded at the PKM Building at 18.185 kN/m³. This location had the lowest infiltration rate of 1.4603 cm/hour, resulting in the highest surface runoff discharge of 0.069982 m³/s. It can be concluded that surface runoff discharge is influenced by soil density—higher soil density leads to higher runoff discharge. Additionally, rainfall intensity affects infiltration capacity; prolonged high-intensity rainfall reduces infiltration, causing surface water accumulation and increasing surface runoff discharge.
