Abstract

Vocabulary is important thing in English because vocabulary applied for the four skill in English, the four skill are Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading. There are so many students who are lack of vocabulary, so the researcher applied Direct Method as teaching method in SMP 25 Pekanbaru. The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of Direct Method on students’ vocabulary at SMP 25 Pekanbaru. In this research, the researcher uses quantitative data, there was one instrument use that was objective test. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel. This research involved 40 students at SMP 25 Pekanbaru. The independent variable of this research was Direct Method and the dependent variable was students’ vocabulary. The result of the t-test showed that the t-table was higher that t-calculate, (1,35 > 0.1). The mean score of the students also showed that there was significant after applying direct method. The post-test mean score of the experimental class (7,1) was higher than the post-test mean score of the control class (6,95). Furhermore, there was a significant difference in the achievement between experimental class than the control class. Moreover, there were some difficulties in teaching English at SMP 25 Pekanbaru can be overcome by using direct method in the teaching and learning process. The result in this research, There is significant effect of teahing english when use Direct method. So that, the researcher summarized that direct method made the students’ vocabulary more coherent and well organized.
