Abstract
Family social support plays an important role in supporting students in completing their thesis, especially for students with a broken home family background. This study aims to describe the form of family social support received by broken home students during the thesis writing process, based on aspects of social support according to Sarafino, namely emotional support, appreciation, instrumental, information, and group. The informants consisted of two students of the Faculty of Psychology, Riau Islamic University who had a broken home family background. The results of the study showed that mothers were the main source of emotional support, appreciation, and instrumental for both informants. Emotional support in the form of attention and motivation helped their psychological stability during the thesis writing. Appreciation support in the form of praise and recognition increased the informant's motivation. Instrumental support included the provision of facilities and academic needs that helped reduce logistical barriers. Information support, although limited, was provided through advice from parents or extended family. In addition, group support from study friends was also a significant complement in helping informants overcome academic challenges.
