Abstract

This study was motivated by the discovery of students with low learning participation at SMAN 1 Lingga of Riau Islands. The lack of students’ learning participation was due to the fact that there were still many students who were inactive in learning, they were more silent so the learning became passive, they were lazy to ask questions, they were not enthusiastic about learning and they tended to do other activities during the learning process. These students’ attitudes were thought to be the result of a lack of teacher variation in using learning methods. The problem formulation of the study was whether the implementation of the Probing Prompting method could increase students’ participation in learning Islamic Studies in Class X at SMAN 1 Lingga of Riau Islands. This study aimed to determine whether the implementation of Probing Prompting method could increase students’ participation in learning Islamic Studies in Class X at SMAN 1 Lingga of Riau Islands. The type of the study was classroom action research (CAR) with 2 cycles, whereas each cycle consists of 4 (four) actions, namely planning, implementation, observation and reflection. Based on the analysis of data obtained in the field, it was found that the students' learning participation before implementing the probing prompting method was in the low category with a percentage of 57%. After implementing the probing prompting method in cycle I, the students’ learning participation increased, namely in the medium category with a percentage of 79%. Then the study was continued to cycle II, the students’ learning participation also increased into the high category with a percentage of 88%. The conclusion of the study showed that the implementation of probing prompting method could increase the students’ participation in learning Islamic Studies at SMAN 1 Lingga of Riau Islands.
