Abstract

Indonesia is an earthquake-prone country because it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire region. Every year, earthquakes cause physical damage to infrastructure as well as significant psychological impacts, especially for school children. Earthquake disaster mitigation in the school environment is generally carried out through conventional methods such as counseling and manual simulation, which has limitations, including lack of student involvement and lack of realism in practice. Therefore, a new, more effective and attractive approach is needed. Virtual Reality (VR) technology offers great potential in increasing the effectiveness of disaster mitigation education. VR is able to create a realistic and immersive simulation environment, so students can practice emergency response safely and more realistically. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of the use of VR in earthquake mitigation simulations at SMPN 1 Bangkinang. The research method includes the development of VR-based simulation devices, implementation on students, and effectiveness evaluation through measuring the improvement of student understanding, skills, and preparedness. This research produced a learning application built with Unity using the MDLC (Method Development Life Cycle) design method. This study also produced a questionnaire with the calculation of the Likert method with a satisfactory result of 84.95%.
