Abstract
Mathematical errors made by students in solving story problems of algebraic form operation material usually occur due to the lack of thinking skills of students. The most common mistake made by students in solving story problems is mistakes in understanding the problem. Therefore, the research aims to find out the mistakes made by students in solving story problems of algebraic form operation material based on Newman's theory and to find out the causes of students making mistakes in solving story problems of algebraic form operation material based on Newman's theory. The research method is qualitative with descriptive type. The research subjects consisted of 30 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 26 Pekanbaru. Data collection techniques using written tests and interviews. Furthermore, data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that the percentage of reading errors was 16.67%, the percentage of comprehension errors was 16.67%, the percentage of transformation errors was 8%, the percentage of process skills errors was 19.33%, and the percentage of errors in writing the final answer was 28%. So, it can be concluded that the cause is that students make mistakes in reading, errors in understanding the problem, transformation, process skills, writing the final answer as stated above.
