Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the important skills to master, especially in vowels when the sounds can be difficult to pronounce. The researcher is interested in finding what vowel sounds are difficult to pronounce also focuses on the factor that contribute to it. The researcher used mixed methodology. The data were collected through two instruments: pronunciation test and interview. This research involved the fifth semester students of English Language Education of FKIP UIR academic year 2023/2024. The sample of this study consist of 20 students that have chosen based on the purposive random sampling. The pronunciation test and interviews served as the primary instruments for data collection. The results of the pronunciation test found that students’ difficult in pronouncing short vowel . The researcher found that most of the students are difficult in long vowels and diphthong. Sometimes students pronounce with American English. Also, there are some factors that are contribute to the difficulties in pronouncing English vowel sounds, such as: do not know the vowel sounds, position of tongue, influences of mother tongue, how they practice and influences on spelling pronunciation.
