Abstract

One of the problems that occurs and is highly avoided during oil and gas drilling operations is filtration loss. The common additive that is often used to overcome filtration loss today is industrial Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) where industrial CMC is relatively expensive so that research needs to be conducted using alternative materials or natural materials to be more economical. The alternative material used in this study is corn husks because corn husks contain polymers and corn husks for drilling function as fluid loss control and viscosifier. This study was conducted to determine the effect of corn husks on filtration loss and drilling mud rheology by determining the volume of filtrate, mud cake thickness, viscosity, plastic viscosity, gel strength. Corn husks are made by grinding and filtering corn husks with gauze, then dried in the sun until dry and a sieve analysis is carried out with a size of 100 mesh. Then corn husks with a composition of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 grams are mixed with standard mud. Filtration loss testing was carried out using the LPLT (Low Pressure Low Temperature) tool. Rheology testing such as viscosity used a marsh funnel tool while plastic viscosity and gel strength used a Fann VG Meter tool. The results of the study showed that the filtration loss obtained was 10.2 - 6.8 ml, mud cake thickness 0.38 - 0.95 mm, viscosity 40.5 - 57.5 cp, plastic viscosity 22 - 34 cp, gel strength 0.53 - 0.67 (lb / 100 ft2). The addition of mass will reduce filtration loss and mud cake and vice versa with the addition of mass causing an increase in the value of viscosity, plastic viscosity and gel strength.
