Abstract

The researcher aimed to find out foreign language classroom anxiety,This study is intended to know the level of students’ anxiety and identify possible factors to contribute the anxiety in speaking classroom. The researcher took a class of second grade students of SMAN 2 Bagan Sinembah in academic year 2025/2025. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with case study approach. The writer used the instruments to collect the data. The instrument is Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale questionnaire, developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). It consists of 33 items with 5-point Likert-Scale. The result of this research showed that there are 34% of the students feel anxious in communicative apprehension, 33% of the students experienced the test anxiety, and 33% of the students were getting anxious in fear of negative evaluation. The research also found that there are most of the students are at “Mildly Anxious” level without “Very Anxious” student. There are 10 (29%) students who experience “Anxious” level, 20 (59%) students are in “Mildly Anxious” level, 2 (6%) students have “Relaxed” level, and 2 (6%) student from 34 students is in “Very Relaxed” level. The results of this research show that from psychological aspect more than a half of students (59%) are in the level of moderate anxiety, 10 students (29%) are in the level of severe anxiety, and 4 students (12%) are in the level of mild anxiety.
