Abstract

Scale is a common issue in the oil and gas industry, particularly within pipeline systems such as flowlines and production lines. Scale forms from formation water that crystallizes and accumulates, influenced by certain ionic chemical compounds produced along with formation water during well production. Scale formation results in a reduction of pipe diameter and slows fluid flow, which can increase pressure and temperature within the pipe and cause pipe damage. Scale may consist of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO?), Calcium Sulfate (CaSO?), Barium Sulfate (BaSO?), and other types. Organic inhibitors have become the focus of research as a more environmentally friendly and affordable alternative. This study explores the use of areca nut seed extract as an organic inhibitor to reduce scale, with test results showing high potential for scale reduction, although further research is needed to determine the optimum reduction values. A comparison with other scale inhibitors such as EDTA 2Na was also conducted to evaluate effectiveness in reducing scale. Based on the research results, the tannic acid content in areca nut seed extract was found to be 24.75%. Areca nut seed extract showed greater potential in reducing scale compared to EDTA 2Na, with a maximum reduction of 60.5% at a soaking time of 55 minutes and a volume of 80 ml. The longer the soaking time and the larger the volume of the additive, the higher the percentage of scale reduction obtained. For areca nut seed extract, the best reduction occurred at 55 minutes. The extract showed consistent and increasing reduction results with increasing volume, while EDTA 2Na exhibited more varied results, peaking at a larger volume
