Abstract

ASTM A36 steel is steel that has a low carbon content. The problem that often occurs with steel is corrosion. One cause of corrosion is fluid flow. Many methods have been used to reduce the rate of corrosion in metals, one of which is by adding corrosion inhibitors. The ketapang tree is a plant that is used as a corrosion inhibitor because it contains tannins in its leaves. Tannin itself is a compound that can be used as an inhibitor to protect metal from corrosion. This research aims to determine the effect of circulating fluid on the corrosion rate and to obtain the efficiency of inhibitors as corrosion in circulating fluid on ASTM A36 steel in 10% H2SO4 corrosion media. The rotation speeds used are 0 rpm, 800 rpm, 1200 rpm and 1600 rpm. The corrosion rate measurement method used is the weight loss method. The inhibitor composition used was 0 ppm and 3000 ppm which was soaked for 3 hours in a corrosion medium. The research results showed that the corrosion rate value increases with increasing fluid flow. The lowest corrosion rate occurred at a rotation speed of 0 rpm at a concentration of 3000 ppm, namely 14.1 mm/y and the highest corrosion rate occurred at a rotation speed of 1600 rpm at a concentration of 0 ppm, namely 219.3 mm/y. Based on this, the inhibitor is able to withstand the corrosion rate in conditions of increasing rotation speed because the inhibitor forms a thin layer on the surface of the adsorbed metal. The inhibitor efficiency value increases along with the amount of fluid flow given because the fluid velocity can increase the inhibitor absorption process by the metal and the formation of a protective layer. The highest inhibitor efficiency occurred at a speed of 0 rpm with a concentration of 3000 ppm, namely 87.4%.
