Abstract
Welding of dissimilar metals in stainless steel and carbon steel is widely applied in engineering, including railways. The problem in welding austenitic stainless steels is embrittlement due to precipitate carbidachrome (Cr23C6) between the austenite grain boundaries. These deposits are formed due to slow cooling from 900 degrees C to 450 degrees C. On the other hand, low carbon steel experiences excessive hardening in the HAZ if the welding cooling rate is high, causing a decrease in toughness. The aim of this study was to improve the mechanical properties of dissimilar welds between austenitic stainless steels and carbon steels with PWHT. The research method consisted of welding dissimilar metals between A36 carbon steel and 304 stainless steel using the SMAW welding technique, 100 amperes DC current and using E6013 electrodes. After welding, PWHT was carried out at temperatures of 500°C, 600°C and 700°C for 1 hour, holding time 15 minutes, and water cooling medium. Then, the tensile test, bending test, and microstructure test were carried out. The results showed that the increase in PWHT tended to increase in tensile strength and yield strength in the tensile test, while in the bending test the bending strength tended to decrease
