Abstract

This study examines the properties of coir fiber composites as a potential material for helmet construction. This composite is a combination of polymer matrix and coir fiber which has good binding properties. Tensile and impact tests were conducted to observe its mechanical properties. The composite material manufacturing process involves the selection and preparation of coconut fiber, mixing with polyester resin, and forming specimens through glass molds. The results of the impact testing showed that the 50%: 50% composition has the best toughness value, while the highest tensile strength is found in the 60%: 40%. These composites have much higher impact toughness and tensile strength values than standard helmet materials. Analysis of the composite fracture shows that the bond between the fibers and resin is quite good, but the arrangement and distribution of the fibers also affect the mechanical properties of the composite. The results of this study indicate that coir fiber composites have potential as an alternative material in the manufacture of helmets with strong mechanical properties.
