Abstract

Drilling operations are important activities that must be carried out to be able to produce hydrocarbons. Drilling mud is one of the supporting factors for the success of a drilling activity. One of the obstacles in drilling activities is swelling. Oil based mud is suitable for zones that have the potential for swelling. Oil based mud is more stable at high temperatures and can also stabilize reactive clay so as to prevent swelling. Oil based mud generally uses diesel oil or diesel fuel as a base material. Aromatic levels in diesel oil have toxic properties. Therefore, researchers want to use mineral oil as an alternative to diesel oil and see the effect of CaSO4 contamination and temperature. The addition of CaSO4 and temperature due to the fact that in drilling often found imperfections in the physical properties of the mud. This study was conducted to determine the effect of temperature and CaSO4 contamination on oil based mud made from biodiesel and paraffin oil on density, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, filtration loss, mud cake and pH. The best overall oil-based mud base material and according to API standards is biodiesel-based oil-based mud which shows a density value (?) 12.05-12.65 (lb/gal), plastic viscosity (?P) 13-34 (cp), yield point (YP) 2-28 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 seconds 6-14 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 minutes 8-15 (lb/100ft2), pH 11, filtration loss 2.7-5.1 (ml) and mud cake 1.05- 1.25 (mm). Meanwhile, oil based mud made from paraffin oil shows a density value (?) 12.15-13 (lb/gal), plastic viscosity (?P) 26-36 (cp), yield point (YP) 18- 29 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 seconds 11-22 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 minutes 13-25 (lb/100ft2), pH 10, filtration loss 4.8-5.6 (ml) and mud 1.2-2.55 (mm).
