Abstract
Corrosion is a process of electrochemical reactions between metals and the environment that produce ions so that they can reduce the quality of metals. Corrosion in industry can attack the hull of ships made of ASTM A36 steel, among others. In this study, A36 Steel was tested for corrosion in cyclic conditions. The test was carried out using the weight loss method, data was taken at immersion time every 1 hour, 3 hours, and 5 hours for 10 cycles, 20 cycles, and 30 cycles. The results showed that immersion in salt water medium caused corrosion on A36 steel plates to occur at the highest speed in nature in 10 cycles, namely an average corrosion rate of 10.82 mm/y. On the other hand, with 30 cycles of immersion, it has the lowest corrosion rate, which is an average of 4.96 mm/y. The occurrence of corrosion also decreases the hardness of the material. The hardness of the specimen before the corrosion test was 71.94 HRB while the lowest hardness in nature in the 1 hour 30 cyclic test was 67.56 HRB. From the cyclic test of A36 steel, it was explained that cyclic can affect the corrosion rate and hardness of the material.
